Kathleen Munn

Kathleen says:

After graduating in 1988 with a Bachelor of Visual Arts my artistic journey turned out to be a series of explorations with many stops and starts. After a stint working in the commercial field as a decorative artist and mural painter, dissatisfaction arising from the fact that "my work' had ceased to grow, led to a serious review of my practice and goals.

Recognizing that art has the potential to connect us with the subjective nature of perception has influenced the direction of my work. An interest in Buddhist philosophy and a love of imagery that can act as a contemplative space informs what I do.

Painting permits manipulation of the ‘ordinary’ to heighten its associative power or expressive potential in order to subvert the normal reading of a given object. The work may then become a site for reflection.

For several years now both enjoyment and concern for the natural environment and my experience of this land, Australia, have informed my work. If you like, my work is about sensations remembered...short phrases referring to but not descriptive of place.

The object is not of itself important; it is be caught by detail and through the act of observation bring order. My paintings are fragments of reality presented simply as a means to evoke a view of landscape, a view that is gently implied and open-ended..
