ARTIST STATEMENT
“We suffocate our innocence by burying it under layers of defences and show the world a façade.” Victoria Peel

Where in the Universe of Stereotypes does Deborah Trusson fit?

Am I trying to break out or fit into a mould?
Why am I made to feel invisible in today's society?
We all want acceptance in one form or another; it's a human foible.
I am currently concerned with exploring issues of uncovering, my identity, my sexuality and my femininity.

The fragility of one's sense, (my sense), of identity and self worth are heightened by the emphasis placed on women by the propaganda of mass media. I think this has ramifications for many women resulting in feelings of insecurity and inadequacy. Such propaganda is not only destructive but subverts one's sense of femininity. Is there little wonder that many women feel revulsion about their bodies? Feelings fragmented by the wanting of acceptability and trying to fit into a specific and often unattainable “ideal”, hiding their true self under layers of defences.

“The gulf existing between the body-for-self and the body-for-others seems impassable.” Simone de Beauvoir

I am attempting to soften people's perceptions and attitudes; I am trying to co-exist, to claim my space in society…Despite whatever understanding or misunderstanding my work may provoke, I offer myself, for myself……

“To live in fear of one's body and one's life is not to live at all.” Naomi Wolfe
