History of the Burnside Painting Group
The Burnside Painting Group was formed in 1963, with classes commencing in 1964 - so for nearly 50 years our Group has been promoting Art in the district.

An enthusiastic group of painters first met in the Burnside Town Hall supper room at the instigation of Colonel Geoff Matthews, who invited interested residents by placing an advertisement in the local newspaper. The vision was for a group of artists of all stages of proficiency and talent helping each other to improve their standards, with him providing some guidance along the way.
This was the beginning of a very successful group, which quickly grew in numbers.
Over the years, many members have become recognised artists and/or have won prizes in community exhibitions.
Many art exhibitions have been held at venues such as North Terrace, David Jones, Burnside Civic Centre, community centres and halls, banks, libraries and hospitals, and many paintings have been sold.
Some founders of the group were Gordon Samstag (first president), Colonel Geoff Matthews, Mrs I. Forsaith (Secretary), Mrs Marjorie Hann and Mrs Louise Chappell.
Tutors who have taught students over the years include John Dowie, John Goodchild, Malcolm Barbins, Marjorie Hann, Gary Gaston, Margaret Hooper and Virginia Jay.
The Burnside Painting Group continues to provide an enjoyable recreational activity within the community, providing members with opportunity for sharing, achievement and creativity.
Anyone interested in learning or practising painting is welcome to join. Membership is open to beginners and to more experienced painters, and members can exhibit and sell their work at regular exhibitions. Classes are taken by experienced tutors and regular social meetings are held, with demonstrations or talks given by well known artists.
